People all over the world enjoy competitive sports.  Why do so many people like sports? What could someone gain from playing baseball, or basketball, football, or soccer?  What about dance, swim, gymnastics, or skiing?

1. Sports are Fun!

Having fun has consistently proven to be the number one reasons to participate in a sport.  According to Happily Daily, exercise increases endorphins and other brain chemicals that make you feel-good.  It also reduces stress hormones, making exercise a great remedy for anxiety.

2. Increased Blood Flow

When doing a sport you are improving your blood flow.  According to Manna Health blood flow helps encourage cell growth and organ function.  Good blood flow also helps you skin to fight off bacteria and infection.

3. Increased Physical Strength

Not only does participating in a sport help you mentally it also helps you physically.  You can gain flexibility from sports like dance, coordination from sports like baseball, endurance from track, or strength from sports like gymnastics.  Many sports will include more then one of these physical aspects.

4. Learn New Skills

When your apart of a sports team you can learn many new skills.  Your coach can correct you when you make mistakes, and can teach you good techniques and new skills.

5.  Build Self-esteem and Confidence

Exercise has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety and improve self-esteem.  With higher self-esteem it is easier to feel more confident in yourself.

6. Improve Teamwork

The majority of sports requires a lot of teamwork.  Playing on a team can help people improve your social skills because you need to communicate and help other people.  For example if your playing volleyball you need to communicate who gets the ball. If you notice a teammate struggling you would help them.

7. Enable People to Set Goals and Achieve Them

Doing a sport enables people to set goals, for example, an athlete might want to get better endurance.  Setting goals can help to motivate you to achieve them and can give you satisfaction once you achieve those goals.

8. Promote Discipline

When you sign up for a sport you sign up to work hard.  No sport is easy, so you will probably be pushed to work hard and sometimes make some sacrifices like, spending your Friday night practicing, or getting up early for a game/competition.

9. Life Lessons

As the UK Huffpost says, “Competition teaches our kids about the world beyond childhood more than anything.”  Sports can show people that trying your best and putting lots of effort into something can bring great rewards, however it is important to keep in mind that even after working as hard as you can, there will still be people who are stronger, faster, or better.

10. Improve Resume

When applying for college or a job it looks really good to have a sport on your resume.  Having played a sport shows that you are competitive, driven, and dedicated.
